Start with the purpose, not just the appearance

A neat-looking balcony net is not enough information to decide whether it suits your home. At handover, ask the installer to identify the product and the purpose agreed in your quote. Pigeon exclusion and child protection are different requirements; do not assume a bird-control net is a tested child-fall protection system.

This is a practical guide, not a certification of any pictured installation. Keep existing railings and adult supervision in place. Never ask a child or adult to lean, climb or hang on the net to demonstrate its strength.

Walk through each opening with the installer

Compare the finished coverage with the openings included in the written quote. Corners, pipe routes and the junction between a wall and railing deserve attention because they can be missed when looking only at the centre of a panel.

View the work from a safe position inside the balcony. Ask the installer to explain any opening left for servicing or access and whether it affects the intended protection. Do not climb a railing to inspect the outside edge.

• Check that each quoted opening has been addressed, including side returns.
• Point out visible loose edges, damaged strands or fixings that appear to move.
• Ask how doors, windows and required service access will remain usable.
• Record unresolved items before accepting the work rather than attempting a repair yourself.

Understand what the fixings attach to

Ask where the net borders are fixed and who will check the supporting surface if it is cracked, loose or deteriorated. A material test certificate alone does not assess your wall, railing or the completed fixing arrangement.

If access arrangements affect a shared facade, duct or terrace, confirm the apartment association's requirements before work. Netting must not obstruct required escape or emergency access. Building-specific concerns should be checked with the association or a qualified professional, not settled by a generic online guide.

Keep the quote and product documents together

Continue ordinary balcony precautions

Keep climbable furniture away from the railing and supervise children. Do not tie swings, hammocks, heavy plant pots or clotheslines to net strands unless a separate system has been specifically designed for that load.

After building repairs or a storm, report visible damage or changes to the installer. Do not wait for the end of a warranty period if a border has detached. Keep children away from the affected opening until it has been assessed.
